Bannie Lee's Parents

Bannie Lee Carter's parents were John Carter (1869-1943) and Jennie Prestwood (1875-1956).  I found this picture on Ancestry.com contributed by Eva Jean Tatom Whitman (her grandmother was Eva Eunice, Bannie's little sister).  I wonder when this picture was taken?  What was the occasion? They look stern.

John Carter was the son of  Daniel Thaddeus Carter (1845-1917) and Marenda Flowers (1845-1926).  Daniel Thaddeus Carter was born in Stewart County, Georgia but lived in the Pike County area by 1860.  Marenda Flowers was born in Pike County.

Jennie Prestwood was the daughter of Francis Marion Prestwood (1845-1923) and Georgia Alabama Black (1849-1928).  Francis Marion Prestwood was born in Holmes County, Florida but his family was settled in the Coffee/Pike County, Alabama area.  Georgia Alabama Black was born in Pike County, Alabama.

This picture of Jennie Prestwood (Carter) is from the brochure produced in the 1980s to raise funds for naming a women's dormitory in her honor.

Bannie Lee Carter (1896 - 1981)

I don't actually have a picture of Bannie.   This is a page (from ancestry.com) of  the 1900 Federal Census for Dixon, Pike County, Alabama.  Bannie is 4 years old.

Bannie's father, John Carter, is 30 years old and has been married 9 years; therefore, he was 21 when he married Jennie Prestwood.

Jennie Prestwood Carter is 28 years old so she was 19 when she married John.  She has 5 children and all are still living:  Daniel, Marcus, Bannie L., Eva Eunice, and Baby.  I think the baby was Marenda Carter, named after John Carter's mother.  She died the following year.

One thing that is interesting is that the Graves family and the Miles family are also on this page of the census.  They lived close to each other (just 5 and 6 doors down the road).  Those of you that live in Pike County,  probably think this is obvious.  However, for me, it was exciting to learn they were such close neighbors.  I'll share more information about them later.

So, what do you think?

A Family History Blog for Us

Over the past few years, I have been collecting information about our ancestors.  I want to share this information with you but there is so much, it is overwhelming.

A blog seems like a good format for genealogy because it allows the information to be available in manageable chunks.

A blog also allows for comments and for family to add what they know.  It would be great if the blog enabled us to share, communicate and even get to know each other better.

Can you name these good-looking men and beautiful women?
